Australian GT NewsAUDI TO DEBUT IN HANDS OF MARK EDDY, ZAMPATTI GETS LAMBORGHINI FOR 2010 VODKA O AUSTRALIAN GT CHAMPIONSHIP
Fresh on the stellar finish to the 2009 Vodka O Australian GT Championship at Sydney's Olympic Park circuit last weekend comes some of the biggest news in the history of the category.
2008 Australian GT Champion Mark Eddy has secured an Audi R8 GT3 for next year's Championship starting at the Clipsal 500 Adelaide (March 11-14, 2010). The car is the first Audi R8 GT3 to be sold to a private buyer outside of Europe.
The stunning Audi R8 GT3 is a rare and exotic car indeed with very few having been produced. Eddy's ability to secure the car came after flying to Europe last Sunday (December 6) for meetings with key personnel at Audi Motorsport.
With so few of the GT3 spec Audi R8's having been produced, the agreement for Eddy to purchase and run the car in Australia is certainly a testimony to the regard in which the Audi factory holds both Eddy and the ever growing Australian GT Championship.
Although he will not drive the GT3 car until it reaches Australia, Eddy is no stranger to the marque having one of the first road going Audi R8's
In another great move for the Championship, Eddy's Lamborghini Gallardo GT3 has been purchased by the highly credentialed West Australian driver Ross Zampatti. The deal was done just prior to the Olympic Park event last weekend with Zampatti and his crew travelling to Sydney to familiarize themselves with the category. As a result of the purchase, Eddy did not run the car at the event.
Commenting on the Eddy purchase of the Audi R8 GT3 and Ross Zampatti's entry into the 2010 Vodka O GT Championship, Australian GT Director Rachael Wagg said today: "We are ecstatic that Audi will be represented on the ever expanding GT grid in 2010 in the hands of 2008 GT Champion Mark Eddy. The debut of Audi in the Championship adds to the incredible range of exclusive marques represented in GT. I am sure all Australian race fans cannot wait to see the Audi R8 GT3 perform next year.
We are also thrilled to welcome another new addition to the GT family with Ross Zampatti and his team. No doubt his wealth of racing experience in Australia and overseas will make him very competitive in what will be the biggest and best season of GT sports car racing this country has ever had".
Zampatti's impressive racing record includes the Dubai 24 hour, the Spa 12 hour, and regular appearances at Silverstone, Hungaroring, Monza, Hockenheim, Brno, Misano, Nurburgring, Dijon, Vallelunga, Imola, Spa, and Malaysia in a variety of machinery. In Western Australia, he first raced in Formula Ford and Formula Mondial after competing in the USA.
